Most people in California get group health insurance through their job. This is also called employer-based coverage. Employers with 50 or more employees buy large-group policies. Employers with fewer than 50 buy small-group policies.

Note: Some large employers "self-insure". This means a different set of rules than insurance policies or health plans applies to them. It's important to know if your employer self-insures because your benefits and protections may be different.
