Health 4 All Week

Commissioner Lara launches first-ever Health for All week of education and outreach at community health centers across the state

Raising awareness of availability of full-scope Medi-Cal for undocumented Californians and other underinsured groups

Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara will join community health leaders across the state during the first Health for All week of education and outreach. With Governor Newsom’s signing of the 2023 budget, all Californians are now eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal coverage regardless of their immigration status. People attending Health for All Week events at seven cities will be able to sign up for Medi-Cal on-site and learn about other resources available at the more than 1,270 not-for-profit community health centers represented by the California Primary Care Association.

California has achieved the lowest uninsured rate ever, yet Asian, Black, and Latino Californians are two to three times more likely to be uninsured, according to the California Health Care Foundation. Commissioner Lara authored the first Health for All Kids law as a state senator in 2015 covering all children, and the Legislature and Governor have since passed laws expanding Health for All to adults.

“I have spent my career fighting for the right of all Californians to have equitable, affordable, and comprehensive health coverage and care,” said Commissioner Lara. “It doesn’t matter where you were born or what language you speak, Health for All is here for you. Signing up for Medi-Cal makes health care a reality for many more Californians.”

“The recent implementation of Health for All marks a pivotal moment in our nation's commitment to healthcare as a fundamental human right, particularly for communities who are often marginalized and overlooked. As an immigrant, I know firsthand the barriers to healthcare access,” said Francisco J. Silva, President & CEO of CPCA. “This initiative is a beacon of hope for all, ensuring that every individual, regardless of background, can thrive and lead healthier, fulfilling lives. Together, we're rewriting the narrative, fostering health equity, and paving the way for brighter tomorrows.”

Full Medi-Cal covers medical care, medicine, specialty care, mental health care, maternity and family planning, emergency care, tests, dental care, vision, hearing aids and more. Californians can learn more about the Medi-Cal expansion at the Department of Health Care Services’ web page which has information in 19 languages.
