ADVISORY - Commissioner Jones addresses climate risk on international stage

PARIS, France — California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones will join other leaders in Paris for the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Global Roundtable and the 4th Climate Finance Day, where he has been invited to speak about the leadership role insurance regulators can and should play to make sure insurers are addressing climate-related financial risks. 

UNEP FI and Finance for Tomorrow have joined forces to host this three day conference of bank regulators,  central banks, finance ministries, insurers, and other leaders in the financial sector to share best practices and approaches to sustainable finance.

Jones is recognized as an international leader in addressing climate risk and insurance. He leads the administration of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' Climate Risk Disclosure Survey, he has required insurers to report fossil fuel investments through his Climate Risk Carbon Initiative, he has asked insurers to divest from thermal coal because it risks becoming a stranded asset, he has undertaken a first-in-nation climate risk stress test analysis of insurance company investment portfolios, and he is the founding chairperson of  the Sustainable Insurance Forum, which is a working group of insurance regulators from around the world addressing climate risk and the insurance sector. Under his direction the California Department of Insurance recently released a report jointly authored with the University of California Berkeley School of Law titled Trial by Fire: Managing Climate Risks Facing Insurers in the Golden State.
