Collection and Use of Personal Information

California Insurance Code Section 2085, and related statutes and regulations, give the California Department of Insurance (CDI) and the Consumer Services Division the authority to collect and forward property location information to insurance companies, on behalf of consumers who cannot locate property insurance policy information for properties located in a designated disaster area. The CDI shares information that you provide with insurance companies providing property insurance coverage, in order to determine whether an insurer has issued a policy covering the subject property. Information is collected subject to limitations contained in the Information Practices Act of 1977, SAM 5310.1, SIMM 5310-A, and other applicable state and federal laws.

Providing Personal Information is Voluntary

You do not have to provide the personal information requested. However, if you do not wish to provide us the necessary information, we may not be able to provide insurers with sufficient information to locate insurance policies applicable to the property in question. Please do not include unrequested personal information, such as Social Security Numbers, Driver's License Numbers, and credit card or financial information.

Possible Disclosure of Personal Information and Possible Contact by Insurance Company

We will share your personal information with insurance companies that provide property insurance. You may be contacted by an insurance company if that insurance company has located an insurance policy it issued covering the subject property. We may also share your information with other government agencies as required by law.
