Independent Medical Review Program (IMR)
Health insurance can play a major role for individuals and families. California's Independent Medical Review Program (IMR) provides consumers with opportunity for an independent external review of coverage denials through its IMR program when a specific treatment has been denied as being medically unnecessary or experimental/investigational. This important program was created by the California Legislature in 2001. For more than a decade, the California Department of Insurance has been continuing to manage the IMR program to ensure that consumers have a fair and efficient process for resolving differences with their health insurance companies.
