Statement from Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara on the swearing-in of Laphonza Butler to the U.S. Senate

Sacramento, CA – Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara today released the following statement regarding the swearing-in of Laphonza Butler to the United States Senate:

“I am thrilled to extend my warmest congratulations to Laphonza Butler on her historic appointment to the United States Senate by Governor Gavin Newsom. Her swearing-in marks a momentous occasion in our nation's history, as she becomes only the third Black woman ever to hold this post and the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color to do so. She is a trailblazer in her own right with remarkable dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to our communities."

“As the first openly LGBTQ+ person to serve as a statewide elected officeholder, I want to place this moment in context: reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights are under attack across the United States. Governor Newsom’s appointment of Senator Butler sends a clear and undeniable signal that California stands for justice for all.

“Senator Butler and I have been good friends for many years. I’ve witnessed firsthand her ability to focus on the big picture and do what is right for our great nation and our great state. Her dedication to helping people by addressing critical issues is unparalleled. She will be a much-needed voice for freedom and opportunity in the U.S. Senate.

“As Insurance Commissioner, I look forward to collaborating with Senator Butler on a range of crucial issues that impact our state and the nation. Together, we will work tirelessly to address pressing concerns for our state such as tackling climate change, securing additional federal support for wildfire mitigation, supporting the creation of a sustainable and resilient insurance market, and pushing for accessible healthcare Senator Butler's perspective and commitment will be invaluable as we tackle these challenges head-on.

“Once again, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Senator Laphonza Butler and her beautiful family, and I am eager to begin working alongside her to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Californians and all Americans.”
