Military Service for Licensees

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is aware that many licensees may be called to military service. Below are the CDI's procedures that provide the licensee with the guidelines to insure that his or her license status will remain in force during their period of military service.

Activation into Military Service

The licensee must notify the CDI by mailing or faxing a copy of their activation orders which must include the date they entered the military service, as well as the branch of service. The fax number is (916) 327-6907.

The mailing information is as follows:

California Department of Insurance
300 Capitol Mall, 16th Floor
Sacramento, CA 95814-4313

Mark the outside of the envelope "personal and confidential - Military Service"

Renewal requirements for licenses which expire during the licensees period of military service will be waived, and the license will remain in force for the duration of their military service and until the end of the license year in which the licensee is released from service, but not less than six months. The licensee may transact and acquire new appointments during this time.

Release from Military Service

  • Upon release from military service, the licensee must immediately notify the CDI by providing a copy of their military discharge papers. The mailing information is the same as provided above.
  • The CDI will review this information, and the licensee will be notified of any additional requirements if applicable.
  • In the event that the licensee fails to notify the CDI of their return, and the license expires after they have been discharged from military service, the license and all active appointments or endorsements will be cancelled due to failure to renew. In order to reactivate the license, a renewal application, fees, including a 50% penalty, and any other applicable requirements must be submitted.
