Protecting the Bay

In 2018, under Commissioner Jones leadership, the Department of Insurance teamed with the Nature Conservancy to form a working group with the purpose of identifying features of the natural environment that could be made more resilient through insurance or other financing mechanisms and thus provide protection to the San Francisco Bay and its surrounding communities.  The genesis for the working group came from the Coral Reef project off the coast of Mexico, and includes representatives from the Department of Insurance, the Nature Conservancy, Swiss Re, the City & County of San Francisco, the Hoover Institute, the Port of San Francisco, San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority, the County of San Mateo, the Coastal Conservancy, and others.  This working group is in the early stages of development and hopes to make significant progress in 2019.  If you are interested in participating in this working group, or have information that would be useful for its endeavors, please contact:  Kathryn Taras.
