Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones and State Controller John Chiang held an investigative hearing into the payment practices of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, also known as MetLife. The hearing focused on whether MetLife failed to pay life insurance policy benefits to named beneficiaries or the State even after learning that an insured person had died. Evidence indicates that MetLife had already learned of the deaths of its policyholders from a number of sources, including a database prepared by the Social Security Administration called "Death Master File," which lists all Americans who die.
