News: California Insurance Market Share Reports

Property & Casualty
The Department of Insurance annually releases a Market Share Report of all lines of business conducted by licensed property and casualty insurers in the State of California.  The latest eight years of reports are available online:

Life & Annuity
Below are our Life and Annuity Market Share Reports.  It includes California licensed companies writing the 5 lines of business listed in the Life and Accident & Health Annual Statement: Life Insurance, Annuity Considerations, Accident and Health, Deposit Type Contract Funds, and Other Considerations.

This report includes the market share information for companies licensed to write Title Insurance in the State of California.  It includes the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) which is a benchmark standard used to measure the competiveness in a market.  HHI is used by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission in reviewing merger and acquisition requests.  HHI of less than 1000 means the market is competitive.  HHI between 1000 and 1800 means the market is moderately competitive.  HHI greater than 1800 means the market is not competitive.

The data used in these reports are from the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's (NAIC) database, for California licensed companies only.   Only companies actively doing business in California (i.e. companies with Direct Written Premium greater than $0) are shown.
