Insurance Commissioner Jones Announces Arrest Of Covina Insurance Agent For Premium Theft, Forgery

On May 12, 2011, Daniel Rafael Carmona, 55, of Covina a former Insurance Broker-Agent, was arrested and booked at the Century Station of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. Carmona was charged with Penal Code violations including one felony count of 487(a) Grand Theft of Personal Property and one felony count of 470(a) Forgery. According to CDI Investigators, between August 2007 and April 2009, Carmona collected a total of $14,623.52 in insurance premium payments and failed to remit the funds to the insurance companies entitled. Carmona's clients, a couple, had their premiums paid to Carmona via their impound accounts held by their banks/mortgagees for the purpose of securing commercial property and liability coverage. This case was investigated by the CDI Los Angeles Investigation Division Regional Office and is being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Carmona's bail is set at $20,000. He faces a maximum of three years in prison if found guilty on all counts.
