Department of Insurance Receives Award for Contracting with Disabled Veterans and Small Businesses
SACRAMENTO - Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones today announced that the California Department of Insurance (CDI) received a bronze award for its outstanding work with disabled veterans' businesses and California small businesses. CDI was one of 41 state agencies and 17 state employees to be honored at the 2012 State Agency Recognition Award (SARA) ceremony sponsored by the Department of General Services.
"Disabled and veteran-owned, as well as small businesses, are vital to the state's economy," said Commissioner Jones. "We have an obligation to support these businesses, and I am proud that my Department was recognized for helping to make them successful."
Each year, state agencies strive to meet a goal of doing at least 25 percent of purchasing and contracting with small businesses. In addition, California's Veterans and Military Code's goal is to have agencies purchase at least three percent of all goods and services from Disabled Veterans Business Enterprises (DVBE). In 2011-12 CDI awarded more than $16 million in contracts, increasing the Department's participation in the program by 93 percent for small business and eight percent for DVBE.
CDI improved its participation in several ways, including ensuring every effort is made to seek out small business and/or DVBE vendors; training IT technical staff responsible for submitting requisitions for hardware and software maintenance to use these firms, and reaching out to small businesses that were not certified as a small business, and explaining the benefits of certification. As a result, their participation increased by $2 million.
The California Department of Insurance, established in 1868, is the largest consumer protection agency in California, regulating the $123 billion insurance marketplace. In 2012 the California Department of Insurance received more than 160,000 calls from consumers and helped recover over $64 million in claims and premiums.
