On August 19, 2011, Troy Lee Dews, age 63, a Life Agent, was arrested and booked at Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Century Station. Dews was charged with two misdemeanor counts for violating Penal Code section 484 (a), Petty Theft, and five felony counts for violating Penal Code section 530.5 (a), Identity Theft. Bail for Dews was set at $50,000.00.

According to California Department of Insurance (CDI) Investigators, from July 2010 through December 2010, Dews unlawfully received $215.00 in commission after he submitted five fraudulent "Guarantee Insurability Benefit" policies on behalf of his clients. The insureds were completely unaware of the extra insurance coverage and only discovered it after they reviewed their premium payment bills from the insurance company. Dews appointment with the insurance company was terminated on February 17, 2011, after the company discovered the fraudulent insurance submissions. Ultimately, Dews' commission payments and charge back balances amounted to $354.33.

This case was investigated by CDI - Los Angeles Investigations Division and is being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
